Description

Chorti Guaya'b coffee is fair trade, organic, and bird-friendly, produced in the Cuchumatanes mountain range in western Guatemala, in the department of Huehuetenango. It is grown on small farms managed by indigenous families who are deeply committed to protecting the environment and producing exceptional Arabica coffee.

It is produced by the Guaya'b civil association, founded in 1998. Guaya'b is a term from the Popti' Mayan language meaning “mutual aid.” The older generations did not use money to hire labor: purchases were not made with coins; their trade and sustainability were based on mutual aid.

This coffee has an ideal consistency in the cup, a well-balanced body with a nice long finish. Pleasant fruity and tangy notes characterize this coffee with its intense aromas and fragrant cup.

The Chorti Cooperative

Founded almost 30 years ago in Guatemala, La Cuna Chorti has always prioritized recognizing the expertise and quality of producers' work. The main goal? To ensure that families benefit from income that prevents family breakdown caused by migration, and that this skilled labor force is invested in their homes and communities. The challenge is to ensure

  • the well-being of their families,
  • the consolidation of their local economy,
  • the preservation of their environment,
  • and the quality of their coffee production through ecological and eco-responsible agroforestry practices, without the use of pesticides or insecticides.

From the plantations to the roasting workshop, the business has always been run without intermediaries or importers. Guatemalan producers are full members of the Chorti cooperative, and commercial terms are established jointly.

Chorti is a citizen-led, solidarity-based, multinational cooperative in which Belgian and Guatemalan stakeholders participate together in the company's General Assembly. Transparency and participation by all is guaranteed.
