Javry's Casal espresso blend is specially designed for strong, full-bodied espressos. Our blend of Arabica and Robusta offers power and richness in a cup, and we have designed it especially for lovers of short, intense coffees, for breakfast or early afternoon.
This blend is one of our most virtuous coffees, thanks to the ecological and social commitment of its producers, and the fact that it is transported by sail. By ordering it, you are making a real commitment to more sustainable and fairer coffee growing!
In a cup, you'll drink a coffee that's thick and intense, but with enough gourmet roundness to be accessible. Its main flavours are cocoa, nuts, toasted cereals and dried fruit, but it may also evoke brioche, vanilla caramel or treacle.
It has been processed using the honey method, also known as Pulped Natural in Brazil, which uses very little water. The coffee cherry is partially pulped, then dried with the remaining pulp and all its mucilage (but not the skin): the mucilage will be nibbled away by microbes and enzymes, and the rest of the treatment can then be carried out.
This blend is made up of 2 Brazilian coffees that complement each other perfectly. A happy marriage, if you like... which is precisely why it's called Casal, which means marriage in Portuguese!
On the one hand, we find the Red Catuai arabica variety, which accounts for 80% of the blend. This variety is very sweet, with a lively acidity typical of the region. It comes from our partner FAF, one of Brazil's leading responsible coffee producers, whom our long-standing customers have already met at our former Bob-o-Link coffee. Reforestation, mixed farming, long-term team training... A global approach!
The remaining 20% are Robusta coffee beans of the Conilon variety: it's these that give the coffee its body and beautiful crema, making the perfect espresso blend! Conilon is grown by the Pessins, a family of farmers who have converted to coffee growing.
Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza is a key player in the committed Brazilian coffee sector. They have been working towards ethical, sustainable production since 2001, spreading their knowledge and helping other producers who want to follow in their footsteps. The FAF farm is a pioneer in sustainable farming practices (such as shaded cultivation and the use of natural hedges) and acts as a study centre and laboratory for spreading these practices throughout Brazil.
The state of Espirito Santo lies to the north of Rio de Janeiro, and to the east of Minas Gerais (another major coffee-producing region). It has 2 distinctive features:
You'll find steep mountains where the clouds hang, forests with remarkable biodiversity, and the sea spray of the Atlantic coast. For a long time, coffee growing in Esperito Santo concentrated on Robusta, but in recent years the region has become a major player in the speciality coffee scene, with an Arabica close to the great Colombian vintages.
Producers in Espirito Santo include families who have handed down their farms for generations, as well as new and young producers. This renewed interest is partly due to the general craze for coffee: between coffee tourism and the media and events that raise the profile of the crop and speciality coffee, setting up as a producer is becoming a real career option for the younger generation, even if they were not born into farming families.
All are aware of the fragility and richness of their land, and are particularly keen to respect and protect the soil and mountains. By buying their coffee, you are helping them in this ecological approach.
While your espresso uses very little water in the cup, it also uses very little carbon during transport! Our Brazilian Casal coffee is one of our coffees imported by sailing boat.
Aboard the Artemis, it crossed the Atlantic on the strength of the wind, aboard a cargo sailboat that saves 90% of carbon compared with traditional sea freight. This method of transporting goods also helps to preserve marine ecosystems, and we're proud to be playing our part in making it more widely available.
As always, this coffee is roasted every week by us in Belgium, using an artisanal slow roasting process. Find out more about the benefits of slow-roasting coffee.
